It is a special arrow with a big wooden turnip attached to the point. Some small holes are drilled in the turnip to make a sound in the air.
Because this arrow is utilized only for the religious rite, it does not have a blade. It is not a weapon to exterminate the enemies, it have evolved into an instrument to exorcise the supernatural variety.
When the "Hikime" arrow is shot, the wooden turnip pierces through the wind and makes a light sound in the air, it is thought to sweep the vicious evil on the earth away (exorcism) from the ancient times in Japan.
The archer of the "Hikime" arrow must be the patriarch of the Ogasawara school or the most experienced and responsible leading apprentices because noble characters are highly required as well as the superb technique of the archery.
